WA State’s First TDOV Proclamation
Pride Across the Bridge helped work on Washington State’s first Transgender Day of Visibility (TDOV) proclamation! International Transgender Day of Visibility is an annual event, occurring every March 31th since 2009, dedicated to celebrating transgender people and raising awareness of discrimination faced by transgender people worldwide, as well as a celebration of their contributions to society.
We are incredibly grateful to Washington State Senator Manka Dhingra for inviting our Executive Director, Axton Burton, to collaborate with the Washington State LGBTQ Commission on the state’s first Transgender Day of Disability proclamation!
This is an incredible honor—and a powerful moment to be in conversation around visibility, trans identity, and the magic that gender expansive people have always embodied throughout history. We’re deeply thankful to Senator Dhingra for uplifting this topic, and for ensuring that our transgender, nonbinary, and Two-Spirit community members with lived experience are centered in this work. Recognition, affirmation, and celebration matter.

Transgender Day of Visibility Proclamation
WHEREAS, Washington state recognizes that one of its greatest strengths is the diversity of its people and has a long-standing tradition of upholding the dignity of the individual; and
WHEREAS, Washington state supports equal treatment for all people regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity and expression; and believes in the values of equity and belonging for all people; and
WHEREAS, members of the transgender community contribute to the growing diversity and prosperity of our state; and
WHEREAS, Transgender Day of Visibility was created in 2010 in response to the majority of media attention surrounding transgender individuals being about the violence they face; and
WHEREAS, Transgender Day of Visibility aims to uplift and celebrate the lives and accomplishments of the transgender community; and
WHEREAS, transgender and gender nonconforming individuals deserve to have joyful and inspiring news shared about their community; and
WHEREAS, Washingtonians are encouraged to observe this day and uplift their transgender community members, focusing on their strength, resilience, and accomplishments through the adversity they face; and
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Bob Ferguson, Governor of the state of Washington, do hereby proclaim March 31st, 2025, as
TRANSGENDER DAY OF VISIBILITY
In Washington, and I urge all Washingtonians to join me in this special observance.
